The latest volume of Statistics Home Improvement Retail Europe has now been published. In it, the editors of DIY International depict the sometimes turbulent development that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the European and international DIY sector.
In 2021, the turnover of the 20 largest DIY operators in Europe rose by 9.1 per cent to a total of EUR 95.667 bn – record growth, even compared with 2020, which already brought a plus of 8.4 per cent. Precisely because times are so turbulent, the research team at Dähne Verlag thought it appropriate to include a comparison with the pre-Covid year 2019: the 2021 plus then amounts to 18.3 per cent.
The two-year comparison is particularly interesting for the six German representatives in the club of the 20 largest. They had to cope with the lockdown in Germany at the beginning of 2021 and at the same time had left 2020 at record levels.
The core of the Statistics from Dähne Verlag are again the country presentations. The reference work shows the DIY store operators for 34 European countries along with the number of stores they operate and retail areas. Two large matrix presentations show the involvement of the European and non-European DIY market groups in their respective foreign markets. Separate chapters deal in turn with the garden market and e-commerce.
