For about five years now Sika has been contributing the company’s experience in the field of construction chemicals, from which only professionals had previously benefited, to the DIY retail trade as well. The products are in the meantime being packaged in smaller quantities, which has made access to the DIY retail trade possible. “We are always positioned in the contractor department, which is commensurate with our products and where we belong,” is how Fritz Burkard, marketing manager distribution, explains the company’s positioning in DIY stores. The programme includes a comprehensive assortment of products in the construction chemicals category that concentrates on the subjects of protection and sealing, bonding, installation and repairs.The range for DIYers profits from know-how in the professional field, including the decorators’ products shown here.New to the range is the “Sika MiniPack-Kit”, for which patent applications have been made all over the world. The aim during the development phase was to create a mortar mix that can also be used by people who are not experienced DIYers and do not have the appropriate tools at home either. Water is added straight to the repair mortar in the container, which thus becomes a mixing vessel. The mass is then easy to apply with the plastic filling knife that comes with the kit. Here special thought has been given to women, who represent an increasingly important group of customers for the company but who receive too little consideration at present.The company is particularly active in the DIY sector in France, Spain, Switzerland and Scandinavia, in South America above all, and in the USA most recently, as well as China. In its involvement abroad the company goes for a global presence and local competence, i.e. language and product are adapted to the country-specific conditions.New to Sika’s programme is a mortar repair kit complete with filler knife and mixing vessel.The origins of Sika, which is headquartered in Zürich, go back to the year 1910. Kaspar Winkler, founder of the company, was an experimenter who succeeded in inventing a chemical product for waterproofing concrete. This invention brought the firm a breakthrough during the electrification of the Gotthard railway tunnel around 1918. The product was and still is called Sika 1, which gave the company its name as well.Research and development still today forms the core business of the construction chemicals specialist.
