When consolidating the branch network, the company is currently concentrating on the south and partly east of Germany as well as Austria, after expansion towards the north of Germany isn't quite making progress. The brand there simply isn't well known enough.
From the company's point of view, expanding into neighbouring Switzerland was also an obvious choice. However, due to the extremely lengthy process of developing new trade locations there, the plan has been dropped - almost at least: since 2010 Dehner has been cooperating with the Swiss retail group Coop. The German garden centre specialists are now advising and supplying Coop's DIY store sales channel Bau + Hobby on the subject of garden trade.
After all, Dehner isn't just a garden centre operator, it is also active in wholesale trade in the field of fertiliser and pets as well as farm products. In total, the company earned € 754 mio gross sales in 2015; for 2016 there was talk of further increases in a single-figure per cent range.
In addition to this, the company also plays an important role in plant production: on its own initiative, the so-called "Gärtnersiedlung" (gardeners' settlement) was developed near to its headquarters in the small town of Rain am Lech. This is where seven horticultural businesses produce ornamental plants over 100 000 m² of outside space and 310 000 m² of greenhouse space.
Dehner strives to distinguish itself through its high quality, in particular that of its range of plants. For this reason, the company also works massively with its own brands in the plant range while focusing strongly on premium quality. This own-brand politics is at least just as noticeable in the hardware assortment.
And, last but not least, this also applies to the pet supplies range. There is now no longer any Dehner subsidiary without its own pet department. A range of living animals in the aquatics and rodents section is part of the standard offer. The company is also extending its share of own brands in the range of pet foods.
