Hoppe-Gruppe: Functional design elements

30.05.2007

The Hoppe group develops, produces and distributes window and door furniture, in which segment it lays claim to be the European market leader

It was 1952 when Friedrich Hoppe founded a company to manufacture door furniture at Heiligenhausen near Düsseldorf, the traditional German centre of production for locks and fittings. Two years later saw the company move its base to what is today Stadtallendorf, near Marburg. This set the course for the company’s expansion, and in 1963 the entrepreneur risked making a move across the border into Italy, or German-speaking South Tyrol to be exact. A determining influence here was the logic of going where the industry was needed and where there were sufficient workers, instead of bringing them over to the plant in Germany. Today the Hoppe group is headquartered at Müstair in Switzerland and has 3 353 employees at nine production plants in Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and the USA as well as sales companies in Switzerland, France, Britain and the USA. The products are marketed worldwide.

The Hoppe group’s core area of competence is in the mass-production of fittings of aluminium, brass, stainless steel or polyamide at what it claims to be an optimal price: profit ratio. Since 1979 it has pursued a consistent brand strategy which is intended to make good handles familiar to customers as a designer detail on doors and windows.
