The Global DIY Summit 2022 is open. Numerous industry representatives came to the Bella Center in Copenhagen today, 9 June, to exchange views on current topics from the world of DIY and the garden trade. The event kicked off with speeches by John Herbert, General Secretary of the International Trade Association Edra/Ghin, Piet de Conick, General Manager of the sister association on the industry side, and host Inaki Millard. “It’s so good to see you again!”, emphasised Herbert in welcoming them.
Sergio Giroldi, President of Edra/Ghin as well as CEO of Obi, and HIMA President Reinhard Wolff also welcomed the guests. Giroldi stressed that the industry must work together to ensure that DIY products remain affordable. “Affordability is the new challenge”, said Giroldi. Mark Herberk, Executive Director of the Cleveland Institute, reported on the impact the pandemic had on the US DIY market, highlighting the role of brick-and-mortar stores.
Keynote speaker Michael Schneider, Managing Director of New Zealand’s Bunnings Group, spoke about measures the company has taken to meet the changing demands of the industry. These include efforts with regard to sustainability, addressing new target groups and, related to this, the retailer’s omnichannel offerings.
Today, a broad programme awaits the congress participants, with input on the topics of personalisation as well as the role of cooperation in developing innovations for the future of the markets. In the evening, the organisers have issued invitions to a gala evening with the presentation of the Global DIY-Lifetime Award. This will be followed tomorrow by further contributions revolving around trends in retail and responsible action.
