Malaysian home improvement retailer Mr. DIY is set to venture into the European Union with its entry into Spain, marking a milestone for the company. Mr. DIY Spain announced on LinkedIn that the retail chain will open "soon" in the country that will become its tenth market.
The company is now hiring for its Madrid office. Conchi Porras Fernández, whose LinkedIn account shows a two-decade career in retail, joined as chief operating officer in August. Meanwhile, business development director Ricardo Gomez Frank had a month-long stint in the Indonesia office of Mr. DIY before joining the Spanish team in July, his LinkedIn page shows.
The venture gives Mr. DIY a foothold in the EU, which operates as a single market of 500 million. The move comes on the heels of Mr. DIY's entry into Turkey last October. The Turkish operations, which opened its first store in Istanbul in November, started a second outlet 9 December and was set to launch a third one five days later.
Prior to this, Mr. DIY had been focused on Asia. Established in Malaysia in 2005, Mr. DIY expanded to Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Cambodia, and India.
