The EU has decided that energy efficiency classes based on the current technology are to be modified and to revert to the original A to G label scale. The plus classes (A+++, A++, A+) will no longer apply. The changeover commenced in 2021. For light sources, a special arrangement will apply with a longer changeover period, as the label on these products is normally printed permanently on the packaging.
From 1 September 2021, compact fluorescent lamps with integral ballast (for example, with E14 or E27 caps), so-called low-energy lamps, will no longer be marketed in the EU. The same applies to linear halogen lamps with cap R7s > 2 700lm and low-voltage halogen lamps (for example, with cap GU4, GU 5.3). On 1 September 2023, linear T8 fluorescent lamps (such as 600mm/18W, 1200mm/36W, 1500mm/58W) and most types of halogen lamps still permitted (including with G9, G4 and GY6.35 caps) will also be discontinued.
One new feature on the label is the QR code. Using this, consumers can access further information in the European Product Database EPREL (European Product Database for Energy Labelling). Manufacturers are currently entering this data in the new EU product database, which will be accessible to all citizens. In addition, private companies and non-governmental organisations can develop apps offering further assistance for purchasing decisions. These suppliers can use the QR code and integrate them into their own app.
