The German market for flowers and ornamental plants in 2022 failed to match the pandemic record years of 2020 and 2021, but settled at pre-pandemic levels, the German Horticultural Association (Zentralverband Gartenbau, ZVG) reported today at the start of IPM 2023 in Essen. Overall, the market volume for flowers and plants in 2022 was EUR 9.0 bn (at retail prices, according to estimates by the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft). According to the report, per capita expenditure on flowers and ornamental plants did fall to EUR 107 in 2022 – around one euro below the per capita expenditure in the pre-pandemic year 2019, which is explained by the population growth in Germany.

In addition to the noticeable reluctance to buy, horticultural businesses had to deal with significant price increases for inputs and major uncertainties in energy supply last year. In the end, however, sales were better than had been feared in the meantime, according to the ZVG, and the pre-pandemic level was more or less reached.
