In 2001, the large DIY centers were responsible for 68 per cent of the total DIY sales of € 3.9 bn Euros. In 2002 it looks as if this percentage will be close to 70 per cent. Until September 2002, the total DIY branch achieved an index figure of 104.3. The large DIY centers outperformed the branch as a total with an index of 105.7.
In one of the largest product groups, paint, the large DIY centers are growing very strongly compared with the paint specialists. Over the past three years, the large DIY centers grew by as much as 24 per cent in value, while paint specialists increased by eight per cent. The paint specialists are still the largest channel in The Netherlands in terms of value, but the gap is getting smaller.
In Electric Powertools the dominance is even greater. Of all powertools sold in the Dutch DIY market 80.4 per cent (in units) are distributed via large DIY centers. The share in value is a lot lower with 64.5 per cent. The reason for this is the large number of promotions, which gives a high share in units but a low average price.
